On November 10th (EST), SK Innovation announced that its NCM9 battery cell has won at CES 2022 Innovation Awards, an annual competition honoring outstanding design and engineering in consumer technology products.

The CES Innovation Awards program is part of CES (Consumer Electronics Show), the world’s largest technology trade fair organized by Consumer Technology Association (CTA) in Las Vegas, USA, in January every year.

This year, SK Innovation’s NCM9 battery, which is developed and produced by SK On, a subsidiary of the company, has been selected as a CES 2022 Innovation honoree in two categories: “In-Vehicle Entertainment & Safety”, and “Embedded Technologies”.

NCM is the abbreviation of Nickel, Manganese, Cobalt, which are the three main materials of the battery, and number 9 indicates that this type of battery cell has the proportion of nickel up to nearly 90%. The higher the nickel, the higher energy and better battery output, but it is difficult to manufacture without advanced technology that ensures safety.

SK On is the first in the industry that has successfully developed the NCM9 battery based on its exclusively unrivaled safety technology and quality expertise. So far, there has not been a single fire accident caused by the batteries that the company has supplied. NCM9 will be installed in the F-150 Lightning, the first electric version of Ford’s legendary pickup truck F-150, which will released next year.

Besides, Right Route, a social enterprise nurtured by SK Innovation, has also been selected as an honoree in “Wearable Technologies” category of CES 2022 Innovation Awards with its flagship product Texnic®, a high-functional textile material made from recycled waste battery separators (Lithium-ion Battery/LiBS films). In particular, Right Route has been using waste LiBS films provided by SK Innovation’s materials subsidiary SK IE Technology, a world leading EV battery separators/materials maker.

Head of SK Innovation’s Value Creation Center, Lim Su-kil, said: “This is a meaningful achievement for our battery business, the core of SK innovation’s eco-friendly vision, to have been recognized for having the best technology.” “We will keep making efforts to contribute to the development of the industrial ecosystem by promoting the company’s core business and technology, and spreading our eco-friendly influence.”
