[Recap] SK Innovation’s worldwide EnviRun campaign in the first half of 2023

To keep our promise to make the Earth clean and beautiful, members of SK Innovation affiliates took part in the EnviRun for the Earth (“EnviRun” in short) plogging campaign in the first half of this year as well. Started in Korea, EnviRun has been running for three years, attracting the participation of not only SK Innovation employees but also local residents of where the company’s global business sites are located.

During the first half of 2023 (until May 19), the number of SK Innovation affiliated members in Korea who participated in the EnviRun campaign was 5,484 people, recording a total of 5,832 times of participation, which is equivalent to 11,094 hours of volunteering.
Following the previous years, the EnviRun campaign attracted the participation of not only the employees but also the top management of the company at home and abroad.

 

The first leader of SK Innovation affiliates that took part in EnviRun program this year is the Head of SK Energy P&M CIC Oh Jong-hoon. On April 12, he and numerous members of SK Energy P&M gathered to pick up litter around Jogye Temple in Jongno, Seoul. On the next day, SK Geo Centric CEO Na Kyung-soo and the company’s employees walked from Myeongdong Cathedral to Namsan Tunnel while gathering trash along the way.

On April 17, CEO of SK Energy Cho Kyung-mok led SK Energy employees to carry out plogging activities along Daehak-ro to Naksan Park, Seoul. And the next leader who joined the campaign in Korea was SK Incheon Petrochemical CEO Yun-seok Choi. CEO Choi and Incheon members clean up the local community by picking up trash near the location of the company on April 18.

On April 20, Head of SK Innovation Institute of Environmental Science & Technology Lee Seong-jun joined the SHE (Safety, Health, Environment) Coordinators to pick up litter around the neighborhood of the institute. A few weeks later, on May 18, CEO of SK IE Technology Kim Cheol-jung visited Jeungpyeong, where the company’s domestic production plant is located, to meet more than 100 employees there and take part in plogging activity together while walking the Samgi Reservoir Deungjan-gil near to SK IE Technoology’s Jeungpyeong facility.

In addition, on April 21, as part of the celebration of the 100th day since joining the company, new employees of SK Innovation also participated in EnviRun campaign as well. They wore t-shirts that were designed to support the 2030 Busan World Expo and carried out plogging around the Cheonggyecheon Stream, marking the first steps of executing ESG practices as SK members.

Also, the Korea Volunteer Center, Korea Road Traffic Authority, and the headquarters of the Korea Coast Guard collaborated once again this year for the EnviRun campaign, following cooperation from the previous year. On April 14, SK Innovation Ulsan complex (Ulsan CLX) and Ulsan Volunteer Center jointly organized the opening ceremony for the EnviRun campaign. Moreover, SK Innovation participated in EnviRun campaign with the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Jeju and the Korea China Economy & Culture Education Association (KCCEA) together on April 21.

| Active participation of global members around the world
 

The beautiful wave of EnviRun, which started in Korea, spread to other 11 SK Innovation-affiliated global business sites around the world. SK Battery America, the first battery production base of SK On in the States, held plogging activities twice along the roadside of Steve Reynolds Industrial Parkway, where its plants are located, on February 24 and March 6 (local time).

The EnviRun activities of local members in the U.S. continued with SKGC Americas, SK Energy Americas, and SK Enmove Americas’ participation on April 22 (local time). Together with their family members, they spent meaningful time collecting litter at Surfside Beach, Texas.

On the other side of the globe, 30 employees of Patra SK, a joint venture between SK Enmove and Indonesian state-owned company Pertamina, along with their family members gathered to pick up trash and clean up around Bukit Datuk, an area in Dumai City, where Patra SK has its office.

Overseas branches of SK Earthon actively joined the campaign as well. On April 20 (local time), 22 members of SK Earthon Hochiminh Branch in Vietnam spent 3 hours picking up litter around the Notre Dame Cathedral of Saigon despite the extremely hot weather.

On the next day, April 21 (local time), employees of SK Earthon Lima Branch headed out to the seaside in Barranco, Lima, Peru to collect trash along the beach. 11 members of Kuala Lumpur branch, along with Kim Kyoung-jun, Head of SK Earthon Southeast Asia Business Office, joined the campaign by cleaning up the area near the Saloma Link Bridge on April 27 (local time).

In Changzhou, China, 18 employees of SK hi-tech battery materials China (a subsidiary of SK IE Technology) and 10 members of partner company took part in the plogging activity together around Qianzi Lake. They collected about 9.07kg of trash there.

From April 7 to 21 (local time), SK Geo Centric’s subsidiary SK Functional Polymer carried out EnviRun activities in Paris, Balan, and Cerdato, France, where the company’s business sites are located. During this period, SK Functional Polymer members spent a total of 26 hours of volunteering and collected 600 liters of garbage.

Following this, on May 12 (local time), SK hi-tech battery materials Poland (a subsidiary of SK IE Technology) held a special EnviRun campaign with the children of a local school for the disabled in Dąbrowa Górnicza, where its production base is located. On this day, after the plogging activity, the company members and the children also held a tree planting event together. The company members were glad to take part in this program, for it could help both the local environment and the disabled at the same time.

Members of SK Enmove India and SK On Hungary also participated in EnviRun campaign by gathering to pick up trash near their offices on May 17 and May 19, respectively.

EnviRun, which has spread beyond Korea to many other places across the globe, is well representing SK Innovation’s “separately yet together” culture. It helps the company members get closer through group activities and join hands to protect the environment regardless of their places and positions. These efforts do not end here, but will continue as more business sites and members plan to participate in EnviRun campaign in the second half of this year as well.
