Ravaged by the Korean War, South Korea lost most of its forests in the past. But when the citizens became united and worked together as one to plant trees in the mountains, it took only about half a century for the green mountains to cover 65% of the land mass in the country.
However, despite such reforestation efforts in the past, the country is currently losing its thick forests due to numerous occasions of wildfires.
Celebrating its 60th year of foundation, SK Innovation is fleshing out the resolution to achieve carbon neutrality by taking an active part in solving environmental and social issues. As part of such efforts, SK Innovation has decided to collaborate with Ulsan Metropolitan City and Ulju-gun of Ulsan City to spearhead the reforestation project in the areas damaged by wildfire.
Last 2020, Ulju-gun, Ulsan Metropolitan City lost 519 hectares of the forest because of the wildfire. SK Innovation plans to plant Sargent’s cherry trees in Ulju-gun until December 2023 and restore a total of 60 hectares of forest.
SK Innovation wishes to give back the green mountains and hopes to the local communities through tree planting. Let’s learn more about the company’s reforestation project in the areas once damaged by wildfires through the card news below (swipe to check).
