He added, “Moreover, SK Innovation is on its way to change its corporate identity from ‘Global Energy and Chemical Company’ to ‘Green Energy & Materials Company,’ and by taking account of the characteristics of its respective affiliates, it strives to create social values by producing green products and services.”

Cho showcased SK Innovation’s green business portfolio by saying, “As a part of the company’s endeavor, the company takes its new battery business as a foundation to expand its green businesses, including battery separators and battery materials recycling. In addition, it has continuously spent its effort in improving facilities to reduce carbon emissions for the energy and chemical businesses and green transformation of their products.” Along with explaining the company’s green portfolio, he also emphasized, “With the company’s experience in creating a venture business ecosystem through the incubation of green venture companies as a specific example of the company’s effort to establish a social carbon-neutrality system, it is possible to connect social impact creation with business itself.”

Previously, SK Innovation partook in the AVPN Northeast Asia Social Investment Summit on November 11th last year, and led a panel discussion session by citing an example of South Korea’s first green startup ecosystem incubation model, “EGG Program,” which was developed in collaboration with the government, large corporations, and impact funds. During the discussion session, Cho Whan-sung, Leader of ESG Impact Unit in the ESG Development Office of SK Innovation, and officials from the impact funds and green startups had a discussion on the importance of an alliance model for the growth of green startups.

*EGG: A coinage of ‘E’ from SK Innovation (as in ‘S’ which has a phonetic symbol ‘es’) and ‘G’ from Green startups. This incubation program supports green startups to grow into unicorn companies, and creates a business ecosystem for them. Through this, it aims to enhance our society’s sustainability.
